Introducing Schindel Studio

A Sustainable Artist’s Sanctuary

Situated in East London, Schindel Studio stands as a testament to sustainable architecture, serving as a purpose-built workshop for landscape painter Amelia Humber. Designed by Archer + Braun, this compact yet innovative studio embodies a harmonious blend of functionality and environmental consciousness.

Architectural Inspiration

Drawing from Alpine Vernacular

Inspired by the architectural vernacular of rural villages in the Alps, co-founder Sarah Braun of Archer + Braun envisioned Schindel Studio as a sanctuary that seamlessly integrates with its natural surroundings. The use of shingles to clad both the walls and roof pays homage to traditional craftsmanship while embracing modern sustainability principles.

Sustainable Materials

Embracing Low-Carbon Solutions

The studio’s shingles, sourced from an artisan producer in Bavaria, are hand-split and crafted from older larch trees, offering a low-carbon and sustainable solution. Opting for a black matte finish accentuates the natural grain and texture of each shingle, infusing the rustic material with a contemporary aesthetic.

Functional Design

Tailored to Artistic Pursuits

Every aspect of Schindel Studio’s design is meticulously crafted to cater to the needs of its resident artist. The pitched roof allows for optimal north light, while maximizing wall space for artwork display. The interior, envisioned as a ‘white box,’ provides a versatile canvas for creativity, with durable surfaces designed for easy maintenance.

Commitment to Sustainability

Pioneering Green Building Practices

From its foundation to its thermal envelope, Schindel Studio exemplifies a commitment to sustainability. Screw piles replace concrete foundations, minimizing environmental impact. The walls and roof are insulated with breathable materials, including wood fiber and recycled denim, surpassing building regulations while minimizing energy consumption.

Integration with Nature

Harmony with the Surroundings

Schindel Studio seamlessly blends into its natural environment, with existing trees providing a picturesque backdrop to the studio’s black shingled façade. This integration with nature not only enhances the studio’s aesthetic appeal but also ensures a sustainable approach to landscaping and site preservation.

In essence, Schindel Studio stands as a beacon of sustainable design, demonstrating how architectural innovation and environmental stewardship can coexist harmoniously to create spaces that inspire creativity while minimizing ecological footprint.
