Introduction to the Project
The Thatched Brick Pavilion, nestled in the heart of Indre By, Denmark, is a testament to innovative architectural practices aimed at significantly reducing carbon footprints. As part of the ‘Housing Construction From 4 to 1 Planet – Next Generation Architecture’ initiative led by Danish foundations Realdania and Villum Fonden, this pavilion stands as a beacon of sustainable design.
Collaborative Endeavor
A collaborative effort between RØNNOW LETH & GORI and CINARK – Center for Industrialized Architecture, the Thatched Brick Pavilion was unveiled during the UIA World Congress of Architects in Copenhagen in July 2023. It represents one of three pavilions constructed to showcase distinct architectural concepts.
Sustainable Building Techniques
At its core, the Thatched Brick Pavilion embodies an exploration of traditional building materials – clay and reeds – to pioneer sustainable construction methodologies. By integrating insulating bricks (poroton blocks) with thatched reeds, the pavilion achieves structural resilience suitable for diverse multi-story housing projects.
Bridging Tradition with Innovation
Rooted in Denmark’s rich architectural heritage and artisanal craftsmanship, the Thatched Brick project seeks to modernize traditional techniques for a carbon-conscious era. Embracing historic building culture while harnessing cutting-edge materials, it forges a path towards sustainable architecture.
The Thatched Brick Building System
The pavilion’s loadbearing structure, composed of poroton blocks, provides inherent insulation. Exterior prefabricated thatched elements enhance weather protection and insulation, ensuring compliance with industry standards for strength and fire safety.
Embracing Durability and Adaptability
Brick, renowned for its durability, promises longevity, fostering a culture of continuous use and reuse. In contrast, thatched elements, with a shorter lifespan, are designed for easy maintenance, repair, and replacement, promoting adaptability over time.
Experiential Sustainability
Through its exposed construction system, the Thatched Brick Pavilion artfully communicates the lifecycle of materials, fostering both logical understanding and sensory engagement. It stands as a testament to the seamless integration of sustainability with architectural innovation.
