Introduction to the Project
Situated in Montpellier, France, the Arceaux district epitomizes the high quality of suburban life near the historic city center. Despite its numerous amenities, such as markets, shops, cafes, and schools, the district suffers from the ambiguity of its public spaces, particularly the vast open-air car park at its center.
A Vision for Renewal
To address this issue, the Base landscape agency proposed a renovation project centered around the theme of “the city at child height,” aiming to bridge the gap between the city center and the Arceaux district.
The Initiative by Collectif Parenthèse
As a precursor to the proposed renovations, Collectif Parenthèse introduces a temporary recreational space designed to prioritize children’s experiences. This initiative seeks to gradually transform public spaces by providing amenities such as outdoor classrooms, swings, motor skills courses, and picnic areas.
Modular and Sustainable Design
In line with principles of circular economy, the modules comprising the recreational space are designed to be easily assembled, disassembled, stored, and reused. This ensures their versatility for outdoor events, festivals, and future installations, promoting sustainability and resource efficiency.
Acknowledgments
The success of the project is attributed to the collaboration and support of various stakeholders, including the Métropole de Montpellier, SA3M, artist FZR Sethi for the ground fresco, and collective Ne Rougissez Pas for graphic contributions. Input from the educational community and active participation from children further enriched the design process, ensuring alignment with the needs and preferences of the local community.
Through initiatives like the Arches Project, Collectif Parenthèse demonstrates the potential for temporary interventions to catalyze positive transformations in public spaces, fostering inclusivity, creativity, and community engagement.
