Genesis of a Vision
In a poignant exchange nearly three years ago, Rolf Fehlbaum, Chairman Emeritus of Vitra, embarked on a nostalgic journey with architect Tsuyoshi Tane through Weil am Rhein, reminiscing about his childhood amidst the fields that now house the Vitra Campus. Inspired by this dialogue and Tane’s concept of ‘Archaeology of the Future’, the idea for the Tane Garden House was conceived. This innovative structure, deeply rooted in the memory of its surroundings, will be unveiled in June 2023 during Art Basel week.
Architectural Philosophy
Tsuyoshi Tane’s design ethos, encapsulated in his manifesto “Archaeology of the Future”, emphasizes a profound engagement with the history and essence of a site. This approach permeates all projects undertaken by Atelier Tsuyoshi Tane Architects, including notable endeavors such as the Estonian National Museum and the Imperial Hotel Tokyo new building.
The Concept of “Overground”
At the core of the Tane Garden House lies the concept of “Overground”, a departure from traditional architectural practices that rely heavily on underground resources. By employing locally sourced materials such as stone, wood, thatch, and rope, Tane aligns the structure with the principles of sustainability and environmental stewardship. Moreover, the involvement of local craftsmen and the utilization of nearby supplies underscore Tane’s commitment to fostering community resilience and longevity.
Harmonizing Nature and Functionality
Measuring a modest 15 m², the Garden House serves as a versatile hub for workshops, storage of gardening tools, and relaxation. Nestled amidst the Vitra Campus, it offers panoramic views of the Oudolf Garten and serves as a gathering spot for employees and visitors alike. With thoughtful amenities such as a coffee corner, outdoor seating, and a viewing platform, the Garden House seamlessly integrates functionality with aesthetic appeal.
A Tribute to Japanese Architectural Heritage
As the latest addition to the Vitra Campus, the Tane Garden House follows in the footsteps of renowned Japanese architects Kazuo Shinohara, Tadao Ando, and SANAA. Its unveiling in 2023 will be accompanied by a special exhibition at the Vitra Design Museum Gallery, offering an immersive exploration of Tsuyoshi Tane’s architectural vision and the transformative journey of the Garden House project.
Through the Tane Garden House, Atelier Tsuyoshi Tane Architects not only pays homage to the rich tapestry of architectural traditions but also charts a course towards a more sustainable and harmonious future.
