Introduction
Nestled within the ancient city of Dongguan Guancheng lies Ruanchong Primary School, a century-old institution steeped in history. Its ties to the Dongjiang River and the city’s rich heritage underscore its significance. Renovated in 2023 as part of the “Dongguan Memory” project, the school’s transformation aligns with the city’s broader urban revitalization efforts.
Renewal Approach
The renovation, overseen by Archseeing, focused on two distinct areas: the street-facing facade and the campus interior. Collaborating with both enterprises and the government, the project aimed to harmonize the school’s presence with the surrounding urban fabric.
Street-Side Transformation
Addressing the interface between the school and the old city was paramount. The existing boundary, entwined with residential and commercial structures, required careful consideration. Retaining original buildings while enhancing spatial connectivity, the renovation revitalized the streetscape through four key interventions:
- Space Inheritance
Inspired by the design of local family temples, transitional spaces between primary and secondary entrances were created, echoing the traditional architectural motifs of the area.
- Functional Connections
Corridor design facilitated seamless access between disparate school buildings, optimizing spatial efficiency and enhancing circulation for teachers and students alike.
- Structural Improvements
Drawing inspiration from historic landmarks like the ‘Archway of the Ming Dynasty Scholar,’ traditional construction techniques were integrated, blending old and new elements while preserving the school’s heritage.
- Material Palette
Utilizing reclaimed gray bricks and locally-sourced granite, the exterior facade echoed the traditional aesthetic of Dongguan’s urban landscape. Internally, modern coastal city architectural elements were melded with local design motifs, bridging the past with the present.
Conclusion
Completed within a mere four months, the renovation of Ruanchong Primary School symbolizes a continuation of Dongguan’s rich urban heritage. By honoring tradition while embracing modernity, the project stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of the city’s humanistic urbanism.
