Introduction
Situated in the vibrant Bao’an District of Shenzhen, the Shenzhen Foreign Language School Baoan Campus marks a significant milestone in the development axis of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. As the first of the four renowned schools introduced in Shenzhen by the district, this campus plays a pivotal role in addressing the challenge of resource scarcity in prestigious educational institutions.
Integrated Campus Design
Originally planned as two separate schools divided by a community road, the project creatively merged the plots into a unified campus, fostering space sharing, resource interconnection, and standardized teaching practices. This innovative approach, approved by the planning department, resulted in the establishment of the largest nine-year consistent school in Shenzhen, offering 102 classes and accommodating 4,740 students.
Campus Infrastructure
To alleviate traffic congestion, the design incorporates a strategy of “double interconnection on the ground and underground.” An underground second floor seamlessly connects the two plots, while a two-story street platform facilitates movement between the north and south sections. This approach encourages spontaneous activities and exchanges among students and faculty, fostering a vibrant atmosphere.
Vertical Campus Design
In response to space constraints, the design adopts a vertical extension strategy to maximize land use. Auxiliary facilities such as auditoriums and gymnasiums are situated underground, creating a flexible and inviting environment. A sunken courtyard and colored floor coverings further enhance spatial diversity and softness.
Vibrant Campus Environment
Inspired by ancient theaters, the campus courtyard serves as a focal point for interaction and engagement. Combining elements of outdoor stairs and flag-raising platforms, the design creates a dynamic “theater” where students and faculty converge. The playground transcends its traditional role, becoming a hub for diverse activities with a sense of community and ritual.
Community Integration
Emphasizing community engagement, the design provides sheltered leisure spaces for parents and widens sightlines to enhance safety. Continuous multi-level corridors, staggered stairs, and layered platforms contribute to a welcoming facade that reflects the school’s cheerful and inclusive ethos.
Conclusion
The Shenzhen Foreign Language School Baoan Campus exemplifies a bold vision for integrated education, combining innovative design principles with a commitment to community engagement. By reimagining traditional school layouts and fostering dynamic interactions, this campus sets a new standard for educational excellence in the region.
