The balcony’s initial state featured mismatched seating and worn square pavers, leaving one narrow section seemingly unusable. Undeterred, Nikki aimed to transform both sides into functional and aesthetically pleasing retreats, embarking on a series of seasonal refreshes.

First Iteration: Cozy Additions and IKEA Decking

For the initial makeover, Nikki introduced new patio furniture and employed IKEA RUNNEN decking, a cost-effective solution at approximately $35 for 9 square feet. The challenge lay in seamlessly covering the tile edges, which Nikki addressed by using small stones from the hardware store to fill gaps. Weatherproofing emerged as another hurdle, with no balcony above for protection. To combat this, Nikki resorted to painting the floor and applying weather-resistant boat varnish, extending the floor’s lifespan.

Turquoise Vibes: A Splash of Teal

Undeterred by challenges, Nikki infused her balcony with a vibrant touch by opting for teal paint, contributing to a lively South Beach ambiance. The teal flooring, coupled with a weather-resistant finish, became a focal point of the revamped space. The paint and weatherproofing expenses totaled approximately $110, proving to be a cost-effective enhancement.

Faux Greenery for Low-Maintenance Charm

In the latest balcony iteration, Nikki introduced faux plants to address the sunlight challenge posed by the southern exposure. Balancing aesthetics with practicality, she opted for realistic-looking artificial plants and flowers, minimizing upkeep efforts. Nikki’s balcony became a dynamic canvas, allowing for seasonal rearrangements without the constraints of rigid design rules.
