Situated in Nam-gu, South Korea, SSAP Coffee, designed by studio “designby83,” offers a charming space for pastries and coffee enthusiasts, nestled next to Ulsan’s Grand Park. The project, completed in 2021, sought to create a vintage and hip ambiance while incorporating elements of sustainability and longevity into the design.
Embracing History and Authenticity
Unlike conventional interpretations of vintage and hip aesthetics, the design of SSAP Coffee aimed to preserve and celebrate the history and original character of the space. The interior, characterized by exposed rough concrete walls, worn-out floor tiles, and simple glass windows, retained most of its structural elements intentionally. This approach allowed the space to maintain its authenticity while embracing natural changes over time.
Harmonious Atmosphere
The interior space of SSAP Coffee was meticulously crafted to achieve a harmonious blend of vintage charm and modern comfort. Warm wood elements juxtaposed with sleek metal accents create a visual contrast that evokes both coziness and sophistication. The inclusion of relaxed arrangements and subtle decorations adds to the inviting atmosphere, ensuring a comfortable experience for patrons.
Unique Design Elements
SSAP Coffee incorporates unique design elements that cater to the sensibilities of the MZ generation, characterized by a desire for unconventional experiences. The strategic use of focal colors, such as red for cabinets, chairs, and bakery showcases, adds vibrancy to the space while maintaining a sense of familiarity for visitors.
Seamless Integration with Surroundings
The exterior design of SSAP Coffee seamlessly integrates with its surroundings, blending with the original old red brick facade. Horizontal wooden accents add depth to the facade, while metal elements provide visual interest and durability. Zinc steel sheets were used for the main door and ventilation, enhancing both functionality and aesthetics.
Unifying Interior and Exterior Spaces
One of the key design principles of SSAP Coffee was to create a seamless transition between the interior and exterior spaces. Birch plywood windows with regular intervals allow natural light to filter in, harmonizing the atmosphere between the inside and outside. This thoughtful integration enhances the unique vibe of SSAP Coffee, creating a welcoming environment for patrons to enjoy their coffee experience.
