Located in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, Terra Restaurant Al Qana, designed by BONE, embraces the brand’s unique architecture while catering to the local community. Completed in 2023, this restaurant seamlessly integrates with the surrounding environment, offering a distinctive dining experience.
Design Approach
Lead architects Achraf Mzily and Natalie Mahakian aimed to establish a strong connection between the kitchen and guests, challenging traditional restaurant layouts. The triangular layout of the site posed challenges, leading to multiple design iterations. Ultimately, a layout running parallel to one side was chosen, allowing for sculptural volumes and open bays that merge the dining space with the kitchen.
Character and Identity
Terra Restaurant Al Qana exudes a rich character defined by a lush greenery, burgundy palette, and distinctive materials. Scratched glazed tiles, patina metal panels, and date seed panels contribute to Terra’s identity. Translucent raw fiberglass panels adorn the existing columns, adding to the unique ambiance. A custom chandelier, crafted from fiberglass, hangs elegantly, enhancing the space’s aesthetic.
Lighting Design
Fabraca Studios crafted a lighting strategy that complements the architectural forms and creates a dramatic night experience. Bespoke light fixtures, featuring consistent design elements, adorn the space, showcasing various mounting details. This cohesive lighting design accentuates the architectural features and enhances the overall atmosphere of Terra Restaurant Al Qana.
