Situated at 66 King Street in Sydney, Australia, The Charles Grand Brasserie and Bar, along with Tiva, offer a sophisticated dining and lounge experience. Designed by COX Architecture and H&E Architects, this renovation project celebrates the city’s elegance and art deco heritage while embracing modern hospitality trends.
Design Concept
Dubbed as “Future Nostalgia,” the design concept pays homage to the building’s rich heritage while incorporating contemporary elements. Stripping the existing 1930s ACA building to its shell, the architects meticulously transformed it into three distinct spaces: The Charles Grand Brasserie, Bar a Vin, and Tiva lounge. COX handled interior design, while H&E oversaw interior architecture and construction.
Architectural Features
Upon entering from King Street, patrons are enveloped by velvet curtains and greeted by a dimly lit concierge, setting the tone for the upscale experience. The grand brasserie boasts a double-height volume adorned with sculpted joinery staircases, showcasing local craftsmanship. A central banquette in Tibero stone commands attention, offering views of the open kitchen and dining theatrics.
Adjacent to the brasserie, the bar a vin beckons with its intimate ambiance, featuring wine bottles lining the windows and enticing passersby. This space complements the brasserie, allowing patrons to transition seamlessly from drinks to a leisurely lunch or dinner. Meanwhile, the basement lounge, Tiva, offers a stark contrast with its raw concrete walls and luxurious furnishings, providing an exclusive retreat for patrons seeking a more intimate experience.
Challenges and Achievements
Integrating four new commercial kitchens and bars into a heritage building posed significant challenges. Careful planning was required to ensure smooth staff and patron workflow while preserving the building’s historical integrity. The result is a harmonious fusion of old-world charm and modern sophistication, offering patrons a truly unforgettable dining and lounge experience.
The Charles Grand Brasserie and Bar stand as a testament to the seamless integration of past and present, redefining Sydney’s hospitality scene with its unique blend of elegance, history, and contemporary flair.
