The Running Bean Café A Contemporary Transformation in Hanoi

Situated in the heart of Hanoi, Vietnam, The Running Bean Café underwent a remarkable transformation by Red5studio in 2022. The project aimed to infuse contemporary elements into a historically significant building while preserving its heritage.

Current Condition Overview

The café occupies an ancient house in Hanoi, which had undergone various renovations over the years, losing much of its original design. Despite its narrow width and lack of natural light, the building retained its inherent charm, including some Gothic elements and ideal height.

Design Approach: FROZEN Concept

Red5studio adopted a unique approach dubbed “FROZEN” to preserve the building’s legacy. Drawing inspiration from icebergs, the design incorporated square cubes, slanted arrays, and diagonal cuts using glass materials with blue tones to evoke a sense of freezing and movement.

Architectural Features

The façade underwent significant changes, with the old mortar removed to reveal the original brick wall, which was then wrapped in stainless steel for a contemporary touch. The entrance was redesigned with a glass wall, giving the appearance of a transparent block of ice with intricate cuts. Inside, the coffee counter was crafted from transparent glass bricks and stainless steel, with a diagonal rectangular block above to reinforce the freezing motif.

Interior Design Elements

The ground floor features a sitting area and an open coffee counter, illuminated by a combination of yellow and blue LED lights to mimic the ambiance of an iceberg. Glass walls and mirrors were strategically used to enhance the sense of space and height. The first floor continues the theme with box-shaped layers made from glass, mirror, and painted plaster, creating an immersive experience reminiscent of being inside an icebox.

Preservation of Heritage

While embracing modernity, the project also aimed to preserve the building’s heritage. Old brick walls were retained and combined with off-white effect walls, maintaining a balance between old and new. The furniture selection, including stainless steel, industrial leather, terrazzo, old wood, and remnants of the original brick, complements the space’s aesthetic.

Conclusion

The Running Bean Café stands as a testament to the successful integration of contemporary design within a historical context. Red5studio’s innovative approach has revitalized the space, offering patrons a unique and immersive coffee experience while honoring the building’s rich history.
