Designed by Displacement Architects, this coffee shop occupies two floors of the Shanghai Youth Cadre Management Institute, offering a tranquil retreat for both young learners and the general public.
Concept and Inspiration
Inspired by the nostalgic memories of rural life, Under the Eaves Coffee Shop seeks to recreate the ambiance of rest and relaxation found under traditional eaves. The architectural canopy, resembling an eave, provides a semi-outdoor space where visitors can unwind and observe the city’s bustling traffic.
Spatial Design
The interior space is meticulously designed to accommodate various usage scenarios. The first floor features open areas for public activities such as landscaping, coffee drinking, and exhibitions, while the second floor is dedicated to lectures and displays. Vertical connectivity between the floors is enhanced with a sturdy double-concrete staircase, replacing the previous steel structure.
Architectural Elements
The semi-outdoor canopy utilizes a combination of steel and wood structures, blending structural integrity with emotional warmth. Pebbles cover the ground under the eaves, preventing excessive solidification and maintaining a natural aesthetic. The building’s exterior and interior are adorned with mosaic bricks reminiscent of the 1980s and 1990s, creating a nostalgic atmosphere that harkens back to earlier decades.
Green Integration
Greenery plays a significant role in shaping the ambiance of Under the Eaves Coffee Shop. Extensive green plants are incorporated throughout the space, reflecting the concept of growth and vitality. The color palette of the mosaic bricks follows a green theme, further enhancing the connection with nature.
