Situated in Su Zhou, China, Wonderland Cafe stands out as a testament to innovative design, seamlessly blending tradition with contemporary flair. Designed by XIAO.DESIGN, this 80 square meter space offers patrons a unique and inviting atmosphere to enjoy their coffee.
Embracing Contradiction
Tucked away from the bustling streets, Wonderland Cafe faced a unique architectural challenge. With a single-layer structure offering limited utility and a double-layer space lacking in room, the designers saw an opportunity to innovate. Bursting with inspiration from this apparent contradiction, they transformed the old into the new, creating a simple yet elegant style. The original doors and windows were reimagined, replaced with horizontally arranged circles, creating a three-dimensional effect. This distinctive facade, combined with curved glass interiors, creates a seamless blend of old and new.
Harmonizing with Surroundings
Surrounded by low-rise buildings, the exterior of Wonderland Cafe was designed to harmonize with its surroundings. The use of firewood and rammed earth texture for the exterior wall paint adds depth and character, while cylindrical skylights mimic the traditional chimney shape. Vertical lines transition from dense to sparse, creating partitions, while strategically placed entrances and exits help regulate indoor temperature and guide foot traffic.
Innovative Interior Design
Inside the cafe, three circular booths are seamlessly integrated between columns, with one placed outdoors for a unique dining experience. Transparent glass maintains unity and simplicity while creating a sense of surprise for patrons. The soft ceiling complements the facade’s light transmittance, enhancing the overall stability of the space. Refined light gray and original wood tones dominate the color scheme, while wave-inspired chandeliers mimic the fluidity of ocean waves.
Creating Atmosphere
Drawing inspiration from music theaters, terraced seating areas offer ergonomic comfort and warmth with birch wood accents. The interplay of adjacent colors creates a cohesive visual experience, while the volume of the space is meticulously shaped and contoured. Craftsmen pay close attention to light and shadow, constructing an atmosphere that evolves throughout the day. Neon lights come alive at night, transforming the space into a vibrant “night city.”
Conclusion: A Space Reimagined
Wonderland Cafe challenges traditional notions of space formation, infusing light and life into every corner. With meticulous attention to detail and a keen understanding of emotional resonance, XIAO.DESIGN has created a space where tradition meets modernity, inviting patrons to experience coffee culture in a whole new light.
