T-FP, an architectural firm based in South Korea, embarked on a unique journey when tasked with designing Wynyard, a restaurant and coffee shop located in Yeonhui-dong. With a Korean owner-chef trained in Switzerland and Australia, serving French modern cuisine in an old building nestled in a quiet back alley, the project presented a blend of cultural influences and architectural challenges.
Concept of Ambiguity
The diverse identity of Wynyard inspired T-FP to embrace the concept of ‘ambiguity’ in their design approach. Rather than attempting to reconcile the various cultural and culinary elements, they sought to celebrate their coexistence. This concept of ambiguity was woven into every aspect of the space, from the architecture to the branding.
Overcoming Challenges
Facing limitations in location and budget, T-FP found creative solutions to ensure Wynyard’s success. Situated in a residential area with few fine-dining options, and constrained by a modest budget, the team prioritized the creation of a unique dining experience. By blending oriental and western influences, as well as contrasting rough and refined materials, they crafted a space that defied expectations.
Unique Aesthetics
Wynyard’s interior, predominantly finished in larch plywood, exudes a distinctive charm. The natural yet artificial duality of the material adds depth and character to the space, embodying the concept of ambiguity. Unique furniture designs further enhance the aesthetic appeal, creating an atmosphere that is both intriguing and inviting.
Multi-functional Spaces
Divided into two levels, Wynyard offers coffee service on the first floor and fine dining on the second. Both areas maintain a cohesive design language, with larch plywood as the primary finish. The lighting scheme, deliberately set to create a subdued ambiance, accentuates the dining experience while ensuring dishes take center stage.
