Nestled at the end of a secluded alley, Yusan Cafe offers respite from the bustling neighborhood. Situated within a courtyard space primarily used by residents for self-built houses, the cafe provides a serene escape from urban life.

Inspired by Tradition

Inspired by the well-preserved traditional villages of the Bai ethnic group nearby, Edge Architects sought to integrate elements of natural construction and rich spatial structure into the design. Thirteen wooden box sub-cabins, reminiscent of local housing typologies, were strategically placed within the existing space, creating a dynamic interplay of enclosed and open areas.

Innovative Design Solutions

To meet both design and cost requirements, locally sourced plywood from Yunnan was chosen as the primary material for the wooden box houses. Each cabin, measuring 2.4×2.4 meters, was crafted as an independent structure, offering guests a sense of privacy and individuality within the cafe.
