Embracing Nature: Stalk Tree-hugger Bar by RAD+ar

A Fusion of Nature and Architecture

Located in the bustling heart of Jakarta, Indonesia, the Stalk Tree-hugger Bar, designed by RAD+ar (Research Artistic Design + architecture), stands as a testament to the harmonious coexistence of nature and modern architecture. This innovative project wraps five existing 30-meter-tall trees in a canvas of light and shadows, transforming them into a dynamic backdrop for various commercial activities. The architect’s vision was to experiment with space creation by using a parametric cloth to envelop the existing greenery, resulting in a captivating fusion of nature and architectural design.

Dynamic Space Creation

RAD+ar aimed to create an ever-changing space that immerses visitors in the experience of living under the shadow of towering trees. Tensile structures act as inverted shadows, casting a moving and evolving pattern on the ground below. As the wind gently sways the trees, visitors can enjoy a comfortable environment while marveling at the beauty of nature integrated into the architecture itself.

Seamless Integration

The entrance to the Stalk Tree-hugger Bar is nestled amidst vertical plants, offering a serene transition into the restaurant space. Visitors are welcomed into a narrow foyer surrounded by lush greenery before ascending to the upper bar-resto nestled among the trees. The upper bar-resto, spanning 750 square meters, features a light steel-timber thatch roof that provides shade for the glass openings while serving as an anchor for the parametric tensile structure. This multifunctional roof also acts as a lantern, illuminating the cityscape at night and enhancing the ambiance with music.

Exploring Sustainable Building Practices

Initiated by Antonius Richard, RAD+ar seeks to explore the possibilities of sustainable building practices while maintaining the commercial viability of prime urban land. The Stalk Tree-hugger Bar exemplifies RAD+ar’s commitment to minimal natural intervention and experimentation with modern commercial spaces in urban contexts. By showcasing the seamless integration of nature and architecture, RAD+ar aims to inspire the decentralization of sustainable building practices in Indonesia and beyond.

In conclusion, the Stalk Tree-hugger Bar by RAD+ar is a testament to the transformative power of architecture in creating immersive spaces that celebrate and preserve the natural world. Through innovative design and a commitment to sustainability, this project sets a new standard for commercial developments in urban environments.
