Nestled within the iconic cast-iron building of New York City, the Soho Art Loft seamlessly integrates three distinct spaces – a working studio, a gallery, and a living area. Commissioned by a painter, this loft underwent a comprehensive renovation above Walter De Maria’s Dia Earth Room, situated in one of Soho’s original Fluxhouse cooperatives, contributing to the neighborhood’s artistic evolution in the 1970s.
Revitalizing Tradition with Modern Design
Led by Diane Lewis Architecture and Fuller/Overby Architecture, the renovation of the Soho Art Loft intertwines contemporary functionality with the building’s 19th-century structural framework. A millwork Pangaea serves as the centerpiece, creating a cohesive yet adaptable environment that caters to the unique needs of each space. The studio, bathed in natural light, contrasts with the intimate domestic areas, while the linear entry gallery offers glimpses of both nearby views and distant horizons.
Harmonizing Space and Functionality
Clusters of furnishings gracefully occupy the open millwork landscape, while a pond-like rug, designed in collaboration with the artist, adds an organic touch to the living room. A custom-designed Boffi kitchen seamlessly transitions from culinary space to studio wet area, blending practicality with aesthetic appeal. Materials such as tadelakt and homasote walls complement the three-dimensional waxed wood armature, creating a harmonious interplay of texture, color, and light.
Embracing Natural Light and Artistry
Sunlight filters through the eastern window wall, illuminating the loft’s depth and accentuating the thoughtful design elements. Lighting fixtures discreetly nestled within the cabinetry enhance the ambiance, while the pronounced ceiling grid adds visual interest and depth to the space. Each aspect of the design exudes a sense of tranquility and sophistication, creating an environment conducive to creativity and contemplation.
Continuing the Legacy
Initiated under the guidance of Diane Lewis and carried forward by Fuller/Overby Architecture following her untimely passing, the Soho Art Loft stands as a testament to collaboration, innovation, and artistic vision. From its humble beginnings in the studio to its completion, this project exemplifies the transformative power of architecture to inspire and elevate the human experience.
