Nestled within a tranquil passage in the 7th arrondissement of Paris, the Segur Flat underwent a transformative renovation in 2022, led by the architectural firm faire. Just a stone’s throw away from the iconic Invalides, this 48-square-meter apartment posed unique challenges with its original floorplan, which lacked space and connectivity, while obstructing natural light.

Creating Space and Connection

The primary goal of the renovation was to cultivate a sense of spaciousness and fluidity throughout the flat. To achieve this, most interior walls were removed, and a glass partition was installed to maintain a seamless connection between rooms and preserve the continuity of windows. This design choice facilitated circulation along the facade, effectively extending the living space to the balcony outside.

Craftsmanship in Design

As architects and carpenters, the team at faire crafted three distinctive wooden volumes to organize the space while retaining an open layout. The kitchen, the first volume, crafted from wood and granite, serves as a transitional space that integrates seamlessly with the rest of the flat, allowing views, light, and movement to flow freely. The use of okoumé and birch plywoods, along with fluted glass and granite countertops, creates a harmonious sequence of interconnected spaces.

Functional Elegance

The second volume, a multifunctional bookcase, combines light and dark woods, curved and straight lines, and alternating filled and empty spaces. Serving as both a storage solution and a design feature, the bookcase incorporates hand-turned ipé posts, birch plywood shelves, and okoumé plywood faces, adding depth and visual interest to the interior.

Bespoke Solutions

Completing the ensemble is the third volume, a bespoke cupboard nestled in the bedroom, which combines storage, a desk, and bedside tables. Tailored to maximize space efficiency, this wooden piece wraps around the bed, offering practicality without compromising on style.

Warmth and Well-being

The open-plan layout, juxtaposition of materials, and abundant natural light create a warm and inviting ambiance throughout the Segur Flat. The interplay of light and shadow, coupled with the cascade of windows, enhances the sense of comfort and homeliness, transforming the space into a sanctuary in the heart of Paris.
