In the heart of Prague 9, Czech Republic, the Rumburská Packwall Flat, originally built in the late 1960s, underwent a transformative renovation led by Papundekl Architects in 2022. Spanning 57 square meters, this small apartment, previously untouched by renovations, now boasts a contemporary design that maximizes space and light, all while embracing sustainability and functionality.
Unified Spatial Concept
The architects opted to eliminate the original prefabricated partitions, transitioning the layout into a single, cohesive space bathed in natural light from strip windows on both sides. Three minimalist boxes were strategically introduced to delineate different functional zones within the open layout. These boxes, clad in recycled Packwall boards, serve as multifunctional elements, housing essential utilities and providing storage solutions.
Sustainable Design with Packwall
Recycled Packwall boards feature prominently throughout the apartment, offering a sustainable and visually striking material for various elements, including kitchen islands, wardrobes, and storage units. Not only do these boards contribute to the eco-friendly ethos of the renovation, but they also add texture and warmth to the predominantly light grey-toned interior.
Personalized Living Space
Jan Bárta, the homeowner, shares his experience of transitioning into the renovated space, highlighting the thoughtful design considerations tailored to his lifestyle. With a passion for cooking and artistic pursuits, the apartment provides ample room for both culinary endeavors and creative expression. The seventh-floor location, coupled with expansive windows overlooking the loggia, imbues the space with a sense of freedom and openness.
Modern Comforts and Timeless Aesthetics
Despite the avant-garde design elements, the renovated apartment exudes a sense of comfort and homeliness. The poured concrete floor offers durability and ease of maintenance, while the integration of Packwall boards adds a unique touch appreciated by guests. The juxtaposition of modern conveniences with sustainable materials creates a harmonious blend of functionality and aesthetics.
Embracing Modernity
Jan Bárta reflects on the boldness of the renovation proposal and expresses satisfaction with the outcome, emphasizing the importance of modernizing his living space while preserving its inherent character. The redesigned Rumburská Packwall Flat stands as a testament to thoughtful design, sustainability, and the seamless integration of form and function.
