Shifting Perceptions of Public Space
Located in London, United Kingdom, the Urban Playground project by McCloy + Muchemwa challenges conventional notions of public space by infusing elements of play and interaction into the urban landscape. Rather than a traditional playground or static sculpture, this installation aims to foster unexpected encounters and new ways of engaging with the city environment. By adopting a child’s perspective, the design seeks to create a more playful and contemplative atmosphere within the bustling City of London, catering to families, visitors, and city workers alike.
Inspired Design Approach
Drawing inspiration from wooden children’s toys with modular components, the Urban Playground features blocks and shapes that invite spontaneous play and exploration. Larger pieces offer cavern-like spaces, while smaller modules are scattered throughout, providing opportunities for seating and open-ended activities. Emphasizing imaginative and physically diverse play, the design encourages visitors to interact with the installation in their own unique ways, without prescribed narratives or rules.
Engaging Journey Through Space
The installation is strategically laid out along a linear pedestrian street, akin to a “trail of breadcrumbs,” guiding visitors on a journey of discovery. Along the way, they encounter intriguing moments and informal gathering spaces nestled beneath the shade of trees. Notable features include a circular labyrinth and the ‘Gilt of Cain’ memorial sculpture, adding layers of meaning and depth to the urban experience. The design creates diverse spaces, from elevated podiums for performances to intimate clusters for quiet reflection, catering to a range of preferences and activities.
Multisensory Experience and Sustainable Materials
Materials were carefully selected to enhance the multisensory appeal of the playground while prioritizing environmental sustainability. The structures feature CNC-cut OSB board and timber battens clad with natural linoleum and heat-treated expanded cork panels. Mirrored panels add diversity to the sensory experience, inviting further exploration and interaction. Bright-colored surfaces in curved or pixelated shapes serve as playful invitations to engage with the installation, enriching the overall urban landscape.
