Nestled in the scenic district of Kannur in Kerala, India, the House of Noufal, designed by 3dor Concepts and completed in 2022, stands as a testament to blending traditional architecture with modern aesthetics. Kerala’s wet maritime climate, characterized by heavy monsoon rains and hot summers, posed both challenges and opportunities for the architects.
A Unique Vision for Modern Living
Commissioned by Noufal Charan and his family, the house was envisioned to reflect the client’s adventurous spirit and desire for a space that defied convention. The architects were tasked with creating a residence that was both unique and surprising, embodying Noufal’s open-mindedness and love for exploration.
Harmonizing Modern and Traditional Elements
The design concept centered on fusing modern architectural principles with traditional Kerala aesthetics, resulting in a climatically responsive tropical home. The distinctive sloping roof, which extends to touch the ground, not only lends the house a unique silhouette but also provides protection from the elements, shielding the interior from heavy rains and harsh sunlight.
Maximizing Natural Ventilation and Lighting
To ensure optimal comfort, the architects incorporated lengthy openings in the outer walls beneath the sloped roof, facilitating cross ventilation and allowing ample natural light to permeate the interior. The layout of the house, spread across three different levels along the slope of the roof, promotes visual continuity and passive cooling. A central courtyard further enhances ventilation and serves as a focal point, with lush greenery and natural boulders creating a serene gathering space.
Blending Indigenous Materials and Traditional Craftsmanship
In keeping with the vernacular style, indigenous tiles were chosen for the roofing, while steel frames provided structural support. Traditional Kerala wooden louvered doors adorn the facade, complemented by concrete flooring with intricate inlay work. A mix of old and new furniture, crafted with traditional detailing, adds warmth and character to the interior spaces.
