Into the Wall House: A Retreat of Reflection and Renewal by bergmeisterwolf architekten

Revitalizing History in Milland

Nestled in the center of Milland, near Brixen, Italy, the Into the Wall House stands as a testament to architectural innovation and historical preservation. Designed by bergmeisterwolf architekten and completed in 2023, this project breathes new life into a chicken house, a part of a historic building, by reimagining it as a sanctuary for reflection, meditation, and rest.

Embracing Continuity and Craftsmanship

Every element of the renovation and extension process adheres to the principle of construction in continuity. Handmade components, including solid stone walls and meticulously restored plasterworks, retain their original tactility while seamlessly integrating modern design elements.

Integrating Nature and Landscape

The newly positioned black-pigmented concrete staircase serves as a focal point, seamlessly blending the building into its natural surroundings. Extending the wall, the staircase creates a sense of retreat in the open air, forging a harmonious connection between architecture and landscape.

Harmonizing Lightness and Texture

A concrete circle atop the volume creates a striking contrast, floating constructively on the stone and offering a space for contemplation amidst untouched nature. Welded, untreated aluminum sheets form the roof’s skin, providing a handcrafted counterpoint to the surrounding elements.

Contrasts and Unity in Design

Special design elements, such as detailed green eaves and red accents inspired by the context, accentuate the building’s historic charm. Window frames and door frames create unity within the space, while inside, an open OSB box painted light pink serves as a multifunctional element, housing the kitchen, bathroom, and wall paneling.

A Space for Contemplation and Creativity

Despite its compact size of 15 m², the Into the Wall House offers a versatile and dynamic interior. The sectional line of the OSB box creates a sense of lightness and openness, providing a space for work, sleep, and introspection—a retreat within itself where one can find solace and inspiration.
